Election

According to BAPA constitution, a general election is held once in two years for the purpose of electing the President, Vice President, General Secretary, Treasurer and seven members of the executive committee. An election commission is nominated by the executive committee. The election commission invites nominations from all active members of the Association. Each nominee is proposed by an active member of the Association and endorsed by another active member.

Ballots for election are mailed to all eligible voters prior to the election date. The completed ballots should reach the election commission no later than 24 hours prior to the commencement of the election. The ballots can be mailed or self-delivered by the voters.

Murad Husain, a New Jersey Pharmacist and pharmaceutical industry executive, was sworn-in as the President of the Bangladeshi American Pharmacists Association (BAPA) in 2008. Mr Husain was joined by Sharif Ahmed (Vice President), Shah Rashid (General Secretary), and Abdus Salam (Treasurer). In addition, Abul Azad, Mohammad Daud Bhuiyan, Mohammed Nurul Haque, Mohammad Akhter Hossain and Abdur Rashid were sworn-in to the two-year term as the Members of the Executive Committee. These leaders assumed their new roles for the period of 2008 and 2009.

Election 2009

The election for the 2010-2011 Executive Committee was initiated in November of 2009. The general members were asked to nominate candidates for the executive committee for the 2010-2011 term.  For updates on the election, please click here. An extraordinary meeting has been scheduled on March 7, 2010, from 2-4 PM, at the Crowne Plaza, 104-04 Ditmars Blvd, East Elmhurst, NY 11369 (across LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York)in response to a petition signed by 52 members of BAPA and received by the Executive Committee on January 26, 2010. The petitioners are of the opinion that in conducting the election of the Executive Committee for 2010-2011 term, there “has been violation of the constitution and by-laws of BAPA in selecting the election commission and execution of the election process”.

We believe the petition (faxed to BAPA Executive Committee on January 26, 2010) and an update from us on the election (e-mailed on January 24, 2010, followed by regular mail) may have crossed in the mail. We provided a comprehensive summary of events and detailed discussions that have happened during several meetings held recently. We are confident that the petitioners, had they read the detailed information provided in January 24 e-mail, might have felt differently about the need for a “special general council meeting”. At this extraordinary General Meeting, we will clarify the background of the impasse, the efforts taken by the Executive Committee and the current plan of action to resolve the issue.
